The Iranian Philosophical Society was originally founded in Oct. 1974 by Prof. Seyyed Hossein Nasr. In 1990 two research Institutes each with three departments (Western philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Sufism and Religions; History and Philosophy of Science; Religious Theology of Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic Religions; Traditional and Modern Logic) were created and annexed thereto. In October 1997, the Iranian Philosophical Society was refounded as a NGO. In 2002 the two research institutes were incorporated into the Iranian Institute of Philosophy (IRIP).

The Iranian Philosophical Society with its affiliated intellectual offshoots has been quite instrumental in propagating the philosophical culture in Iran, a country which has been well-known for its great philosophical heritage.

Goals

Research and in-depth study of philosophy in Iran, both pre- and post-Islamic; In-depth study of philosophy, Eastern and Western; Cultivation and propagation of philosophical thinking among the educated class and in the community at large; Communication with philosophical centers abroad; making the Iranian and Islamic Philosophical heritage better known abroad.

Summary of the activities of the past five years:

The society sponsored many international conferences about distinguished philosophers (Kant, Nietszche, Hegel, Ibn Arabi, Rumi, Avicenna and others). It has free of charge courses on eastern and western philosophers for the interested audience. Right now it is offering 18 courses.

Activities Planned for Next Year:

A three day conference in late October 2009 with the theme “The status of philosophy in the Islamic countries “in which, scholars from Iran and about 40 distinguished scholars from other countries are to participate This will be a prelude to the World Philosophy Day which is celebrated internationally in Iran in 2010, in which the Iranian Philosophical Society is the main sponsor.
